3 more problems

Here are three poetry problems I thought would be especially interesting:

Write what you think the first ever poem written by artificial intelligence would be like. Write the actual poem and discuss it's features.

Take two poems and use use the words and phrases to stitch them together. Take two sad poems and stitch them into a funny one, or vice versa. Take 3 poems and stitch them together to talk about pencils or socks, your choice.

You try on on a poem and walk around in it. How do you tighten the laces? What wear do you see? Is it comfortable? Discuss the experience both generally and for a specific poem.

  1. These seem like good prompts. They have enough specificity to direct a response, while still making room for creativity. I especially like the second prompt, since it seems like it would have a lot of potential.

  2. I like the first prompt, and it's still totally relevant for someone to try to write a poem as if it's being written by artificial intelligence, but isn't that already possible for us to discover? Aren't there computer programs that will generate random poems based off of an algorithm? It's not exactly the same thing as true "artificial intelligence" but it's still really interesting, and certainly a step in that direction!

    1. Yeah I was thinking of true artificial intelligence when I was writing this because we have not yet reached that and the idea was that you would be able to ignore all limitations of computers and focus on what a computer might chose to talk about which is super interesting.

  3. This is very interesting! I like the idea of using the phrases of two or more poems to sew them together to create a new poem with a new feel to it. I also like the idea of trying on the poem. It almost reminds me of "Introduction to Poetry" by Billy Collins.

  4. I really like your first prompt, it's fascinating to think about. I feel like the poem would be very short and direct, and a little standoffish, however with a prompt like this, I'm sure you would get a lot of variety.

  5. The first prompt was quite interesting. You probably meant a true, sentient, artificial intelligence, as opposed to a computer-generated poem that a human specified the inputs for. I think that an AI would write a poem that we wouldn't even be able to recognize as poetry.

  6. I really like these, especially the third one. It reminds me of the idea of putting yourself in someone else's shoes and walking around in them. In this case, it would be like putting yourself in the speaker or poet's position and trying to understand their perspective. Also, the idea of "tightening the laces" seems kind of interesting to me, like tailoring the poem to fit you.

  7. I really like your first one, especially now that I see Lyle's post. Its so creative. I do think it would be interesting to see what a poem would look like doing your second prompt.

  8. I love these prompts (so much that I wrote a whole post in response to one). There is room for creativity, but enough specifics to tie down a response.

  10. Wonderful problem prompts. I was so glad Lyle even took you up on one. And clearly he was very inspired by your prompt :)
